Regarding the translation of the psalms: If the 1662 Book of Common Prayer was used at the service in question, the psalms would be from the Coverdale Psalter, which predates the King James Bible by about 75 years.
The method of saying psalms as described is very common in monasteries, seminaries, and others with a chapel layout.
