the FAQs
Private and disused boards
FAQs index

Are there any private boards?

Yes, and there are two types. Firstly, there are private boards which are run by individual shipmates on specialised subjects. And there are also the ship's own administrative boards, which are not open for public viewing.

What are the private boards run by shipmates?

A complete list of the private boards is available here. You can apply to the owner of each board if you would like to join.

Can I have my own private board?

Yes. You can set up and run your own private board on Ship of Fools for a small yearly fee. Click here for more details.

How come I saw lurkers on a private board?

If you're a member of a private board, you'll sometimes see lurkers listed on the Recent Visitors feature at the foot of the page. How can that happen, when only board members can access the private boards? The answer is that every board member can be listed in the Recent Visitors feature as a lurker, if they want. To do this, go to your profile, click on the "View/update profile" link, and look for the " Hide from recent visitors feature?" button at the bottom of the page. If you check the "yes" button, you will be listed as a lurker rather than by your display name. Only people with access to the private boards can access them, even if they aren't named.

What are the ship's administrative boards?

Ship of Fools runs a number of private boards with restricted access. Some of these are temporary boards which are used to develop specific projects for the magazine aspect of the ship. The other permanent boards are...

> Hosts – the clearing house and forum for hosts.
> Admins – the clearing house and forum for admins.
> Archive X – for storing threads Ship of Fools wants to keep but not display.

Are there any disused boards on the ship?

Yes. Here are the most interesting of the disused boards. All of them are open for reading, but none can be posted on.

> Nativity Play – shipmates put on tinsel and dressing gowns for our own Nativity Play, staged over 14 days in 2002.
> The Laugh Judgment – a fascinating discussion of individual religious jokes, funny and sick, which was part of our Laugh Judgment project in 2005.
> The Da Vinci Code – discussion about Dan Brown's book, timed for the release of the movie in 2006.
