What are private messages?

Members of these boards can send private messages to each other. These messages are not email, but one-to-one communications that can only be read by the recipient. Please note that private messages are every bit as subject to the 10 Commandments as posting on the public boards.

You can read private messages in your profile section – simply click the "My profile" link near the top of every page. You can also elect to be notified by email whenever someone sends you a private message (you can set this in your profile). You can also prevent anyone from sending you a private message (also configurable in your profile). Only registered members may send private messages.

To send someone a private message, look for the private message icon at the top of a post by that person (the icon shows two people shaking hands). You can send a private message through the person's member profile, or from your buddy list, if you've added the person to your list.

Can private messages be posted on the public boards?

There is nothing that prohibits the posting of private messages on the public boards. Nothing, that is, except for common courtesy, good judgment, and the hellish wrath of your shipmates.

If you choose to risk hellfire and brimstone by publicly disclosing private communications, you must still abide by the ship's 10 Commandments. You cannot post identifying information about anybody. You cannot bring a conflict onto the boards that did not start on the boards. A post that quotes from a private message will be judged by the same standards as any other post (plus, you'll probably get called to Hell over it).

If the person who sent you the private message agrees to your request to quote them, that's another matter, of course.

What is an ignore list?

Ignore lists apply to private messages only. Anyone you add to your ignore list can no longer send you a private message. You can put someone on your ignore list by viewing the member's profile and clicking on the "Add to your ignore list" link.

What is a buddy list?

Buddy lists apply to private messages only. Anyone you add to your buddy list is stored in handy location, so that you can easily send the person a private message.
